My Secret to Scoring 99%ile in CAT VARC

📖 Here’s My Secret to Scoring 99%ile in CAT VARC

When I started preparing for CAT, the VARC (Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension) section felt like the most unpredictable one. Some days I’d ace it, and on others, the same RC passages would drain my energy.

But over time, I built a strategy that worked for me — and helped me score 99%ile in VARC. Let me share it with you 👇

🔑 Step 1: Reading is Non-Negotiable

I didn’t just “practice” RCs. I built the habit of reading every single day. Editorials from The Hindu, Mint, and even articles from Aeon or The Atlantic became my go-to.

This did two things for me:

  • Improved my speed & comprehension

  • Exposed me to different writing styles (philosophy, science, economics, etc.)

🎯 Step 2: Smart RC Approach

Instead of reading every word with a magnifying glass, I trained myself to:

  1. Skim the first and last lines of each paragraph carefully (to catch the flow).

  2. Focus on the tone & main idea rather than details.

  3. Go back to the passage only when the question demanded it.

This saved me precious minutes ⏱️.

🧩 Step 3: Tackling VA (Odd One Out, Para Jumbles, Summary)

  • For Para Jumbles: I looked for connectors (pronouns, transition words like “however,” “therefore”).

  • For Odd One Out: I checked if 4 out of 5 sentences formed a logical flow — the odd one was usually easy to spot.

  • For Summaries: I always asked, “If I had to explain this in one line to a friend, what would I say?”

📝 Step 4: Mock Practice is Everything

I didn’t just take mocks — I analysed every single mistake.

  • Why did I get this RC wrong? Was it vocabulary, tone, or time pressure?

  • Which VA question type took me the longest?

This reflection was my goldmine. Over time, I realized accuracy matters more than attempting everything.

⚡ Step 5: Exam Day Mindset

On the actual day, I told myself one thing:
👉 “Don’t panic. VARC is about staying calm and picking your battles.”

I started with passages that looked easier/shorter to build confidence, then moved to tougher ones.

💡 My Final Secret

If there’s one takeaway, it’s this:
You don’t need to attempt all questions. You need to maximize accuracy on the ones you’re confident about.

That’s how I managed to hit 99%ile in VARC.
