Odd Sentence Out Concepts

📝 Odd Sentence Out in CAT VARC – Don’t Ignore It!

“Odd Sentence Out” — also known as Sentence Exclusion or Misfit Sentences — is a must-do topic in CAT. Every year, around 3 questions are asked from this section. Can we afford to ignore it? Never!

🔎 What is Odd Sentence Out?

The examiner gives you 5 jumbled sentences.

  • Any 4 of them form a coherent paragraph.

  • The 5th is the misfit, which needs to be identified.

This makes the question tricky, because you don’t just have to spot the odd one — you also need to mentally unscramble the rest of the paragraph to confirm your answer.

🧩 Example Question

Step 1: Original Paragraph (Correct Order)

  1. The voucher is valid for one month only.

  2. It is valid only on a purchase of a single product of Rs. 600 and above.

  3. A customer should hand over the voucher to the cashier before billing.

  4. Employees and their immediate family members are not allowed to redeem these vouchers.

Step 2: Shuffle + Add Misfit Sentence

  • Customer should hand over the voucher to the cashier before billing.

  • Employees and their immediate family members are not allowed to redeem these vouchers.

  • The best sales personnel will be awarded with a gift voucher of Rs. 10,000 in the Mega Sale.

  • It is valid only on a purchase of a single product of Rs. 600 and above.

  • The voucher is valid for one month only.

Step 3: Find the Odd Sentence

The 3rd sentence about sales personnel is unrelated.
👉 That’s the Odd Sentence Out.

🎯 How to Solve Odd Sentence Out Questions

  • Look for theme consistency — all valid sentences should belong to the same context.

  • Watch out for tone shifts — one sentence may sound promotional, while others are informative.

  • Use grammar & connectors — pronouns, conjunctions, and references must link logically.

  • Apply Parajumble logic — try to form a paragraph; the leftover is your odd one.

✨ Final Note

Odd Sentence Out may look simple, but it’s a high-scoring topic if you practice well. Each correct answer is a step closer to that 99 percentile in CAT 2025.
